Applying 1st Law of Power in Office Politics and Workplace Success

Why You should not get ahead of your Boss: Mastering the 1st Law of Power for Workplace Success

What are the practical ways to keep the Boss happy by using the First Law of Power [out of the 48 Laws of Power by Rebert Greene] which states that - Never Outshine the Master.

Every boss wants his / her subordinate to be an expert in his / her domain. But this expertise should not be such which will make your Boss uncomfortable. He / She may even feel threatened and his / her dominance challenged by your brilliance.

This may result in the him / her making your work life difficult and will show you the meaning of office politics with the following undesirable consequences:

  • He / She may criticize you in front of your colleagues or your subordinates. This will weaken your confidence and others may start questioning your competence.
  • He / She may take credit for your well performed work. Your achievements may be downplayed in front of higher ups leaving a skewed perception of your abilities.
  • He / She may withhold challenging assignments or opportunities which are really required for professional development and growth. He / She may try to keep you stagnant and make sure that your skillset is not updated.
  • He / She may control access to crucial information or networking opportunities, limiting your exposure and ability to build your professional network.
  • Your boss may start micromanaging which will lead to anxiety and reduced creativity. It sends the message that you're not trusted to do your job well.
  • A bad boss may overload you with an unreasonable workload or set impossible deadlines. He / She know that no matter how hard you try, you will fail one day. Then you will be labeled as incompetent.
  • Therefore to avoid such unpleasant situations to develop in your career and to ensure that you do not loose your mental balance due to such unwanted developments, you should try to find that sweet spot between making your boss feel comfortable and ensuring your own career shines.

The following advice may be valuable in your pursuit:

  • Put your Boss on Pedestal: Highlight your boss's strengths by publicly recognizing his or her efforts and leadership. Frame your accomplishments as a consequence of their help and insights.
  • Nobody loves a crying baby:, Don't merely bring problems to your employer. Come prepared with viable solutions or next steps to demonstrate your initiative and problem-solving abilities.
  • Become Their Right Hand: Offer assistance with presentations, reports, or administrative responsibilities. This alleviates their workload and establishes you as a reliable contributor.
  • Focus on Team Wins: When your team succeeds, don't take the attention. Celebrate the collaborative effort and recognize everyone's involvement.
  • Be proactive: Identify possible bottlenecks for your boss and propose solutions ahead of time. This demonstrates your insight and capacity to anticipate forward.
  • Become a knowledge powerhouse: by attending courses and reading professional magazines to stay updated with the latest trends. Share your knowledge with peers (including your employer), and establish yourself as an expert.
  • Provide regular updates to your boss: on your progress and aggressively seek feedback. Transparency builds trust and allows for course corrections if needed.
  • Practice Active Listening: Pay close attention to your boss's goals and issues. Tailor your approach to their aims and expectations.
  • Focus on the Bigger Picture: Your aim is not to outperform your boss, but rather to contribute to the overall success of the team and business.
The above list is not holistic. You may add your advice which I have missed in the comment section.

In conclusion, a strained work environment created by a boss can significantly hamper your career by hindering your motivation, development, and visibility. It can also damage your professional network and well-being.

Remember: The 1st Law of Power isn't about underperforming. You must give your 100% and let everyone know that you are a force to reckon with. But in this process, your Boss should be a part of your success in order to have a successful and sustainable career.

Bonus Tip: Stay informed about industry trends and company developments. Knowledge is power, and this awareness can help you navigate office dynamics strategically.
